ok,

no problem with lowering the rears, it's easy to do.  It will affect your
handling, so experiment a bit.  You are fine without the dust covers.

Whoever told you that they won't handle the Neuspeed Race springs
was on crack :), they would be fine.  I was using a Ground Control setup
with 375lb springs up front and 300 in back (Eibach Race) on Bilstein
sports, and they held up with no problems at all....
