It may well be that VW was developing the platform initially with the
intention of using it for the Rabbit and ended up speeding things up for
the Scirocco.  Perhaps their thought was that they needed a flagship
vehicle (for marketing purposes) before they transitioned most of the
line to water-cooled.

I know I've seen '77 models and possibly a '76, but I don't know for sure
when it was introduced.
