   I wonder if coating it with a hardening agent, Polyurethane, or something
else would help give it a paintable surface. There used to be a material
used by the military on helicopters....it was soft where it contacted the
surface and progressively harder toward the surface. Worked well for noise
reduction and was very durable.

Yeah I'd think you'd 1st coat it with something to close the pores and
then top coat it with a paint with a bunch of flex agent in it.
