Hey Alex,

Since it doesn't look like anyone has responded to your question, let me try.

I don't have a Bentley for an '83, but for a '79 there are 3 resistor values
you can use to check the fuel guage.
R1 is 47 ohms +/- 5%.
R2 is 100 ohms +/- 5%.
R3 is 220 ohms +/- 5%.

In VW's infinite wisdom of parts interchangability, my guess is these same
values would work for all of our cars.

These resistors are use to verify the accuracy of the guage. The resistors
are used one at a time on the unplugged Violet/Black wire that was taken off
the sending unit. The other end of the resistor is grounded.

With the ignition on and R1 in place, the guage needle should indicate at the
full mark to about one needle width below the mark.

With R2 in place, the guage needle should read at the 1/4 tank mark, give or
take a half a needle width.

With R3 in place, the guage needle should read at the bottom of the red empty
area.

The Bentley goes on to say that if you don't get these readings, you need to
check out your voltage stabilizer.

To directly answer your question, 47 ohms to 220 ohms.

HTH.
