Power Steering for Mk1

Need some experimental experience from my fellow super Sciroccoites 8)
My question is this:
If the power steering rack is a closer ratio, right?, can you install it,
plug off the lines, and run it as a manual rack?  Anybody ever try this
before? Just trying to find a way to get a cheaper close ratio rack than
Auto-Tech.
