Halogen tail lights

Hey all.
I'm thinking about switching all my tail light bulbs to halogen (brakes,
parking lights, reverse, directionals).  A buddy of mine has heard that
VW lenses can melt if halogens are used, as they sit too close to the
bulb.  Any truth to this, or am I safe in having brighter tail lights?
Oh, and just for shits and giggles, anybody have any Hella headlights
they want to get rid of?  I want better light, but I don't want to
spring for Euro lights just yet.
