That would be Giorgetto Giugiaro of Italdesign.  He designed the original 
Golf and Mk1 Scirocco.  The Mk2 Scirocco was designed in-house by VW's own 
design team,   clearly borrowing from the Giugiaro design proposal.  
Giugiaro's Scirocco redesign was eventually bought by Isuzu and used for the 
Isuzu Impulse, by the way.
