As always, do what you want. You don't like to listen to good advice,
look at your turbo motor project. Prime example of you not listening to
good advice when its given. Do what you want, you thing a 3" system is
better for a heavily modded 1.8L 8v motor, by all means, go for it. 

Unless your running 12 or 13:1 compression, you don't need anything
larger than a 2" mandrel bent system. The 1.8L 8v doesn't flow that much
air and the dynamics of the motor require that the 2" system gives enough
back pressure for max performance. 

The 1.8L 16V flows much more air so it requires the 2.25" system for its
flow rate while retaining back pressure for its best results. Bigger is
not always better. 

Now, how is that a blanket statement? Unless your talking about a turbo
1.8L 8v (is that your definition of modded?) then the biggest size it
should see is 2" but I thought you bailed out on the turbo thing along
time ago.
