I took a thin, flat blade screwdriver, and while pushing the gauge 
down on a table, pried at the outer ring, slowly, until the face 
popped off.  Just be careful not to crack the housing.  I did chip 
off some of the lip the face plate  bends around, but there's still 
plenty there to hold it on.

When you put it back together, it looks messy; kind of jaggy, but if 
you touch it up, the worst of it is in the back and hidden by the 
mounting plate
