Overheating engine

Very wet (raining hard)and bedraggled , I wander in to ask for help.
The engine is getting the water hot enough to boil over into the resivoir.
The top hose to the radiator is hot, yet the lower hose is only warm.
Disconnecting both hoses and running water hose in, water streams through
the radiator. Is the top hose connected directly to the bottom hose via the
coil in the radiator? (As I assume)
Putting the hose into the engine block (via the top hose), it backs up and
will not pass through the engine. Will the water pump stop the water from
flowing out?
Which direction does the water flow? From the engine to top of the radiator?
Watching the water flow in to the resivoir, flow comes in bursts, and seems
mostly like white foam.
The guys at the auto shop say it is a possibility is that the head is
cracked or that the gasket is blown.

Any ideas for me to check out?
