RE: antenna amp?

Yes! to several of your questions. The amplifier is located in the base of
the antenna. First, I would remove it and fix all corrosion, and try it
again. The ground is important to porper reception, amped or not. Make sure
power is getting to the antenna, too.

If the reception is still similar to being in an underground bunker, then
the amplifier is dead. If you don't want to spring for another antenna, you
have to remove the guts from the base of the antenna, and connect the wire
from the mast directly to where the cable attaches, bypassing deceased
electronics. It may be held in by foam-gunk, so be patient, work carefully.

I don't find it hard to meet expenses. They're everywhere!
