EC is old? It was VWP just yesterday . . . :-)

  Anyone done any prophylactic measures?

I had the clutch bracket thingy break on my good old
1980 Scirocco S rust bucket. To restrain the clutch in
lieu of this bracket, I put some combination of large
metal washers on the motor side of the firewall to
keep the cable from being simply pulled into the
interior. This admittedly sad repair lasted until the
car met it's ultimate fate (disintegration) about a
year or so later.

I is not sure if this is what you is talkin about, but
HTH

I advise that you get this fixed properly if you plan
to keep the car in the long run, as this will
ultimately stress out the firewall metal, whic was not
designed for this type of abuse. I did it because the
car had one foot in the grave anyway . . .
