10 mm socket or wrench.
New Thermostat. (Get the good one from Mark er' Mike, don't skimp by
buying cheap.)
New O Ring.

Under the car you remove the two 10 mm bolts that hold the elbow shaped
pipe. (Cars with A/C and or Power Steering will present more of a
problem, perhaps.)

Be Prepared. Coolant will pour out so be ready with a catch container.
(Coolant spilt on the ground or down the drain is not good.)

The thermostat will present itself, replace with the new one & the
replace the O-ring while you are there.

Before you bolt it all back together you might back flush the system
with the garden hose to get all the old coolant & sediment out. Remember
to keep the heater on FULL HEAT (early cars).

Replacement (as they say) is the reverse of removal. :)

Refill with a good phosphate free coolant and distilled water. Min mix
is 50/50. Cooler climates warrant 60/40 or even 70/30 coolant to water.

To avoid a air bubble in the eng. block fill the thing from the upper
radiator hose until it's full, then run the car awhile and top off.

Small tip: drilling a _small_ hole in the plate of the thermo prior to
installaion will help the liquid on each side to gai equalibrium. Since
it's such a tiny hole it will not defeat the basic function of the
thermo. Old ones used to have this hole, with a small brass 'piece'
stuck in it to get the bubbles out, but slowly.
