Re: Non-Roc: Jetta Trans Question

There's a small lever inside the tail of the transmission (shaped kind of
like a "6") that presses on the actuating rod when you step on the clutch.
It can crack and will just slide on the splined shaft instead of push the
rod. It's pretty simple to replace. You pop the green cap off of the end of
the tranny and you'll see the lever I'm talking about. It usually breaks
toward the inside (where you can't see it). If I remember right, there's a
spring that wraps around it and makes the clutch cable return to rest. You
need to pull on the spring so that you can slide the external lever and shaft
towards the front of the car. You can now put the new lever up in the trans
housing and slide the shaft back in making sure you get the spring in place.
As all the manuals always say "Installation is reverse of removal procedure."
Make sure you get a new green cap too since the old one will surely leak if
you try to reuse it. Check your fluid level and you should be back on the
road. Takes me about 30-45 minutes start to finish. Good luck!
