No, you have to remove and disasemble the trans.

A1 and A2 VWs all used the same style of automatic (don't know about the
A3s or the Passats)...this definately applies to 70s to early 90s VW
autos...

Depends on the conditions, if the fluid has been changed regularly (which
can extend the life greatly) etc.  A VW auto that has never had it's fluid
changed or taken care of might go out at 60k.  One that has been taken
care of might not need the seal replaced till 120k.  I had an 84 Automatic
Rocco that had 90k on the clock, had been well maintained and showed no
signs of the seal leak.  ran and drove great.
