NW Dyno Day Wrap Up

All,
Dyno day went off without a hitch this weekend (my directions aside). We had
a good turnout, a total of 17 cars with 13 of those cars hopping on the
dyno. Kelly ended up bringing a Viper GTS instead of his 1.8T Roc, as Kelly
always does rides were given. Hope you were able to clean up the passenger
seat Kelly. Riley and some canucks made the trek down which was awfully
cool.

I ended up putting down 136.9hp and 127 ft/lbs of torque. My A/F was kind of
fucked and I was running a little rich. I put the car back on the dyno after
everyone had left hoping to dial in the mixture a little better but I ended
up richening it even more and I lost 6hp from a 1/2 turn on the mixture
screw. 140hp would be entirely possible given more time to get the mix
right. Plus the car was hot and probably heat soaked. She had a hard day
with 5 total dyno runs. Unfortunately time ran out and I couldn't do a coast
down test to get a driveine loss figure. Anyone got any ideas what this is
at the crank? So I walked away happy.

Jared put his 1.8 16V on and turned in 120hp at the wheels if memory serves
me correctly. Andy put his cracked out 1.9 8V on and turned in a impressive
and deceiving 115hp. A VW Vortex MK2 also showed, he had 2.0 running
Motronic with a Garrett chip and hit 120hp while running way too rich.
Probably the most notable story of the day was Wings turbo. He turned in a
112hp at 4K if memory serves me correctly, all the while from the minute he
applied full throttle the A/F gauge went red. His car became so starved for
fuel it bucked at 4.5-5K. The car was just barely spooling up when it would
run dry. This not to mention the huge torque curve he got. Once he gets his
fueling problems worked out his car will be scary fast. And much to the char
grin of certain Hecho En Mexico VW owners present it did not catch on fire,
WAY TO GO WING!

The Corrado guys had a good day also. BrianL with his Lysholm fed G60 turned
in the highest HP number of the day (besides the Viper). He turned in a
solid 183hp if memory serves me correctly. This very much impressed all the
techs as did his flat torque curve. Didn't pay much attention to the Corrado
guys but I'm sure they walked away much like the Scirocco guys, going "we
will do this again in 6 months!"

There was also a SWEET B3 VR6 Passat with a Abt grill and full zender kit, a
very very clean Drivers Edition VR6 GTI who took the cake for best exhaust
note with AndyM running second. Apparently I was the loudest heheh. Riley
got the cake in my book for cleanest Mk2, with Jared stepping up for biggest
numbers while remaining somewhat stock.

The shop we ran at was EXCELLENT, Carburetor Connection in Kirkland. I cant
recommend these guys enough, they gave each car individual attention and
pretty much as many runs as you really wanted, at least two. They would
point out trouble areas and do some quick troubleshooting. For 10 bucks
extra you could have A/F done, this was very helpful to diagnose some probs
some cars were having. They were very helpful and always pleasant while
trying to move a large amount of cars through the dyno while giving
individual service to each car. After you're run you could have a one on one
with a tech to be sure you understood what exactly your chart and dyno info
meant. They were very nice to allow 20 or so people to crowd into the shop
and socialize while cars were be dynoed 2ft away. I was very impressed. They
also specialize in boosted cars and turbo tuning. They had a couple very
sweet cars in the shop being serviced, a twin turbo RX7 and a what appeared
to be a heavily modded MR2 Turbo, a Cobra with a 5.0 mustang lump etc. I was
also told that they offer a piggy back system for boosted cars that does
something similar to the Apex-I but with none of its shortcomings. This is
an in house and custom design tuned for your specific car and mods.
Installed and tuned on the dyno the system runs in 1K to 1300 range if
memory serves me correctly. I'm sure if these guys make it then it does what
they say. Contact Alex at the Carb Connection for more details,
www.carbconn.com.

I have movies of some peoples runs and as soon as I get some time will past
them. We will defiantly do this again, probably in 6 months or so....now to
buy a bunch of Ramen noodles and get some Shricks. 150hp here I come.
