84 limited edition???

A friend of mine had an 84 rocco that was green with a gold stripe years ago
before he realized the value of the car... it was totaled in a wreck and the
insurance guy told him that his car had special engine in it... thinking he
would never own another vw he let it go... 

Anyone know what engine this was ?
Oettinger? Or european engine with Heron head? I am curious about what engine
this was because the bastard was faster than his mustang 5.0 he had at the
time
