(8v) Adjusting valves?

 I am having a bit of a problem with the 1.8 8v (JH) motor
that is in my '81 Scirocco (w/ solid lifter head).
The motor used to rev smoothly and feely until recently
when I have noticed it deteriorating in it's smooth rev'ing.
When the engine rpm's rise to around 4000+ the engine starts
to vibrate and gets worse as rpms climb.  The motor still
idles fine, but starts to show weakness and vibration as the
rpm's climb.  I'm afraid to rev it out anymore...
  Could this be a sign for the need of a valve adjustment?
What other signs might be noticed if the valves were in need
of adjusting?  Will the valves start clicking?  Will this be
most noticable at idle or while driving?
