No, well, maybe...it depends. :)

Any given engine can probably put quite a hurt on any given transaxle
depending on how it's driven. There's nothing inherently wrong with
the '1.8L' transaxle bolted to a 2L engine...the factory did it also.

The interesting transaxles from a Scirocco centric point of view are
all based on a design designated the '020'. It started out as a four
speed in 1973-74, and a fifth gear was added in 1977 or so (in a
Scirocco naturally, the Super Scircco I think, or was that a 78 model?)
Anyway, the 020 units have been in every A1 (US Rabbit, Jetta, Caddy,
& Cabriolet) and almost every A2 (Golf, Jetta, but not Corrado) from
the factory. Some 90-92 Golfs & Jettas came with 2L 16v engines stock,
mated to an 020 transaxle. However, they aren't all the same. Internal
differences are (in no particular order): mainshaft output diameter,
2nd-4th gear ratios (and sometimes 5th if you had one), final drive
ratio, drive flange output diameter, susceptibility to self machining
(one sentence sum up on that one!), and A2 case compatibility (holes for
A2 mounting not in all final drive casings). Miss anything anyone?
Remember, color doesn't count. :)

If I were you, I'd be more concerned about the clutch/pressure plate
combo then the transaxle. Run a good synthentic fluid (I highly
recommned Redline MTL), and if it's not balking or crunching you're
probably set for a long time of wild fun behind the wheel of 2L 16v
Roc.

So once again I channel the great Iain Mannix with a long winded
reply to a simple question with way too much information. I miss
the old days sometimes... :)
