squealy noise when off accelerator

hey folks,

I have a strange squeal in my 87 16V. Its a constant squealy noise, like a
poorly oiled rusty old bicycle pedaling. It sounds like its coming from
the direction of the v-belts, but I don't want to jump to conclusions. It
is proportional to engine speed (ie if the engine is at 2000 rpm and i let
off the gas completely while coasting down a hill in gear, as the engine
decelerates, the squeal does also.) It does not happen unless the car is
in gear, clutch engaged, the accelerator pedal has been completely let
off, and the engine is providing "braking".

Is this normal? If not, what might it be? mistensioned belt? (unlikely
since i just removed, reinstalled and retensioned them and the problem
occured before and after i did that), bad bearing in a pulley? (does make
sense because then it would happen all of the time)

Its not a terribly annoying squeal, but I'd like to fix it if possible
because it makes the car sound ford minivan-ish and I like to use my
engine to keep under the speed limit down inclines rather than riding my
brakes like everyone who has an AT.

Thanks,

-Toby
