MKII instrument cluster trim installation

I pulled the instrument cluster out enough to replace a blown bulb, and
was impressed with the ease of removal compared to other VW's - no
requirement for messing around with the radio or switches.

I do have two questions for the list, though:

1) The trim piece does not seem to be very secure.  I do not remember what
it was like before I took it out, so don't know if this is normal.  The
two screws are installed at the top, and the bottom appears to be seated
with its channels in the dash.  I am able to easily move the bottom
towards the instrument cluster over 1/4" when it is in what appears to be
it's 'proper' position.  Is this just the way these things are?

2) I was unable to lean the cluster forwards enough to detatch the
speedometer cable to allow its removal.  According to the Bently, it is
supposedly possible to do lean it forward enough to detatch the vacuum
hose and the speedo cable.  I know I can do it on the A2 dash.  Is there a
trick in the Scirocco, or did I not have enough slack in the speedo cable?
I have been a bit spoiled in the A1 Jetta chassis - I can pop the LH fresh
air vent and reach through to detatch the speedo from the back of the
cluster and not have to remove the lower dash panels (which looks tedious
on the Scirocco!)
