'81's electrical woes...annoying its owner

Waaaahhh. I want my car to work.

Everything that normally works off the battery still works (emergency
flashers, parking lights, clock, etc). When the key is turned, nothing
happens. No change.

I've been playing with it trying to make sense. Hoping the '81 Jetta diagram
is the same, as the '81 scirocco's wiring diagram is incorrect. My car was
made in 8/80.

When +12v is applied to terminal #50 near the ignition switch, the starter
operates. This would rule out a bad ground going to the ignition switch,
right?

I'm lost in a sea of wires.

I'm almost considering contemplating starting my electrical system from
scratch. The car is nearly 20 years old, and the systems were flaky when
they were new. I've had several brittle spade connectors crumble when taken
off thier posts. Who knows what else is up with them?

Am I nuts for thinking this?

If I'm not, would the fuse box from a Scirocco 16v be a better idea? (My '81
has a 16v 1.8l) Would I convceivably have to replace the car's main wire
looms to make this headache upon a headache effective?

It pisses me off.
