Re: Strange Cardboard Stuff by Radiator




The cardboard(?) material is there to direct airflow into the radiator
from the front of the car.  Without it air can go around the radiator
reducing the cooling efficiency of the rad.  On A2 models, they got smart
and replaced the cardboard with molded plastic, so it's less likely to
disentegrate when you're replacing your rad.  On my 84 GLI I replaced the
cardboard with a rigid corrugated plastic used for making signs.  On my 83
Diesel I live without it... :)
