a weekend FULL of working on the 'roc

Well, this weekend I did nothing but eat, sleep, and work on my '84
Scirocco. As I mentioned earlier, the headgasket blew when a
heater hose I had blocked off blew. I had it blocked off because my
heater core was leaking and I was planning on doing it the night it
went.
So this weekend I replaced the headgasket, pass. motor mount,
radiator, heater core, exhaust manifold, downpipe and new exhaust.
Everything was straight forward at the begining. Got the head off in
about 20 mins. at night with hand tools and reassembled it the
next day. The exhaust was pain though. I ordered an Autotech
exhaust from GPR for an '84 Scirocco. However, my car is actually
a 10/83. Can you see where this is going? It was kind of a bugger
to fit, but I got it work and it doesn't hit anywhere. I plan on fixing
the hangers right in about a week. It should be good till then.
The heater core was pretty easy though. I didn't bother to split the
case. Just broke out the die grinder with a cutting wheel and cut
out a panel in the shape of the heater core on the driver side, slid
the old one out, slid the new one in and put the panel back in with
a bit of sealer. Can't tell it's been done at first glance and it works
without fogging the window.

The moral of this story, order your exhaust by production date,
learn how to flat rate heater cores, and you can get loads of work
done on a weekend. Later.
