Re: Overheating Troubles <TBerk's long reply>

<lots of good info about how he has done every thing but the following,
deleted.>

Looking at your story I'd say it is imperative you get the fan running.
It sound like the thermo switch is a good candidate to replace. If yo
have a hard time getting at the thermo sw. and the wires that go to it
then you'll have to temporarily get the battery or what ever out of the
way just enough to test the fan.

Pull the battery (I am assuming your year's battery blocks the thermo,
if not you'll have to rely on the other list members w/ Mk2s), and pull
the two wires from the thermo switch. For all intents they are inter
changeable. Connect the fan to the batteries pos and neg. terminals. It
should hum along like crazy. No? If not then pull the 4 screws/bolts
that hold the fan shroud tin in place and pull the thing out. You may
need to loosen the fan in the shroud to maneuver the thing out.

Lets say the the fan runs ok, then it the thermo switch. There is a 180F
switch that's popular, contact the Potterman.

Might want to get some dielectric grease while your at it to help seal
and keep corrosion free those electrical connections as you recondition
them to shininess.

Since you are considering it, and if the system need s to be opened up
then I'd not only back flush it (with he heater FULL ON) but replace the
thermostat & O-ring while the thing is empty. Refill with some Phosphate
free stuff & distilled water.

During refill, Pour your premixed solution in the upper radiator hose,
heater full ON, right. Reattach it and fill the rest of the system. Let
the thing idle until you see the thermo open and the fluid level drop in
the open radiator fill tube. Top off to the mark and close it all up.

The other things I can think of that may be your problem would be an
ineffectual water pump impeller, or a stuck thermostat. Q. Is the
radiator getting hot? Or is the engine pushing the boiling stuff out
over the top of the rad.?

Winter is coming, a good cooling system re-do can be done for $50 or
less. Might as well do it now.

Gonna go now, my fingers hurt. Hth,
TBerk
