VWs are contagious.  I bought my first Scirocco in 1993. 
Now look at me.  Not only that, but my dad has since
purchased a VW ('82 Rabbit) and my sis dumped her Saturn
for a '92 GLi.  Now I just need to convince my mom that she
needs a Passat...

And my ex had no excuse - drove an '87 16v 'rocco.  :)
