Re Lightening flywheels?

I agree that it is cheaper to machine down rather than buy a new one.  That's 
what I did.  I didn't machine it myself though.  I took mine to a machine 
shop and they cut and balanced it.  I can see the cutting is easy.  The 
balancing is a bit trickier.  When the shop balanced it, they needed my 
pressure plate.  One, so they have a center to bolt onto and Two, so all the 
rotating mass is accounted for when they spin it.  Here is an after picture 
of my 190 mm flywheel.  He left a small lip on to hold the pressure plate 
just in case there was a catastrophic failure of the mounting bolts.  Notice 
the drill points where he balanced it.  I can't remember how much weight was 
taken off, I'm kicking myself for not writing it down.
