I used a closed hole, rubber grommet.  It fits perfect and looks OK.

I have the same linkage and motor out of a 82. I just pulled the entire 
assembly out and it snapped pretty much right in. I cant find a plug either 
though.....I have duct tape on mine.....let me know if you find anything......
