You can't go wrong with Bilstein Sports...
If your buddy's Bilstein setup is for an A1, I'd buy it.

I've been running Bilsteins for years and they really stand behind their
product.
Yesterday, I received my front strut replacements, no questions asked...
They didn't even ask for a receipt, plus Lynn sent me a bunch of
stickers.8^)

I have Bilstein sports with Neuspeed sport springs on my '83 GTI and it
handles great.

As far as I know, the only advantage of coilovers is the height
adjustment and the spring rate options.
