fuel pump relay

I try to start my scirocco today after work. Turn the key. It starts up
and dies immediately. Try again .It turns over ,but doesn't start.
Voltmeter reads well over 12v. I think probably fuel pump. I figure out
which relay to pull(#2),and attach a jumper wire from pin hole 30 to 87.
It starts and runs .This is the second time in 2 years the relay has
gone. Is this a common occurance with VWs (my 87 Gti and brothers 85
Jetta also needed new fuel pump relays.
