I had this problem.  The odometer wouldn't spin for a few hundred miles 
then start again for no particular reason.  It eventually gave up entirely. 
 Turned out to be a problem with the odometer itself.  Took it to a speedo 
shop, plunked down something like $75, and the problem was fixed.  I 
believe this is a common A1 problem.

What would make the speedometer work but not count up the millage? Speedo
cable? Or is the gear in the cluster bad?
