firing order.

I was trying to put on a new distributer cap, but when I had the new one
on, It wouldnt start so I figured that I had accidently switched the
wore positions, so I looked in my manual (haynes) and tried the order it
said, but that didnt work either. Can somebody please describe the order
that the plugs have to be on the cap? also, the little wire connection
on the side of the distributer is falling off, it just wont stay in
place. Could this have an effect?
