Cincy (from a redneck's point of view)

Hey all,

Having just returned home (finally!!) and filled my belly with pizza, I can
now sit down and tell some events as I saw them.

First off, I met up with Josh Strait on the way down and we toured together.
Nice guy, nice car... we also split the hotel room. He kept asking me
for Advil in the mornings, saying something about sinuses, but I'm guessing
it had more to do with his activities the nights before involving *several*
beer bottles ;)

I still think I had some help in polishing off the bottle of booze I brought
with me and "hid" in the freezer, as there is no way I could have possibly
drank it all by myself... heheh

I'd like to thank Neal Tovsen for going in on a pepperoni pizza with me
while all the other weirdos were getting stuff like almonds, cinnamon, and
pineapple on their pizza. I'd also like to thank Brett for being conscious
enough to look out the side window of Daun's rocco (mid-swig mind you) to
see if that was a cop we just passed...

Everybody else has already mentioned how sweet the cars were, etc so I'll
skip all that jazz

I did get the opportunity to race with Mr Mad Bastard himself and his wicked
2.0 16v A1 GLi (2 door even!!)... I fully expected him to waste me, which
he did, but it was closer than I would have guessed. I'll be shooting for
ya next time Jason, with the silver truck though :)

And for those of you who are wondering, I made it home just fine on that
tire with the huge crack in the sidewall... and despite my best attempts
at burning the tread off, they still look exactly like they did when I put
them on about 10,000 miles ago.

However, I did have a problem with the truck on the way home... I left
Daun's house about 8 pm Sunday night. Around 11 pm the truck just up and
died, like somebody had turned the key off, except for the fact that the
headlights were still on, radio, etc. Of course I didn't have a flashlight
in my toolbox, so made sure to stop under a streetlight on the offramp
(amazing how far one can coast from about 105 mph). After checking all the
wiring connectors, etc I popped the distributor cap off to look inside. It
was too dark, so after unsuccessfully trying to use a front parking light
bulb and socket as a trouble light I gave up for the night. I slept in the
truck (very uncomfortable, seats can't recline back) and froze my ass off.
Morning light came, and I could see some bare wire near the hall sensor
plug, almost like the wire terminal was pulling out of the plastic plug
housing. I grabbed my small needlenose pliers and tucked it back in where
it belonged, put everything back together, and fired the truck up.

I made it about 20 miles before it died again, this time not to be revived.
I was convinced it was a hall sensor problem as the distributor had
developed a nasty oil leak. I hitched a ride back into Indianapolis with a
trucker and checked a few auto parts places (Napa, Autozone, etc), none of
which even had a listing for either a hall sensor OR a complete distributor
in their computers. Shit, now what am I gonna do?? Neither place could
tell me where I might find one in a junkyard. I broke down and called Daun,
told him I'd make it worth his while if he could bring me a distributor and
give me a ride back up the highway to my truck. 4 hours later, Daun arrives
in what at the time looked like the sweetest white Scirocco in the world
(all rescue vehicles look good no matter what)

So a huge thank you to Daun for rescuing my sorry ass in the middle of
Indiana (different distributor with a good hall sensor makes all the
difference in the world in how an engine will run), and again for hosting
the Cruise in. Thanks to his dad for the airplane ride too, what a feeling!
Anybody have a plane laying around that they might like to trade for about
20 VW's??

The rest of my trip was uneventful... so I guess it's time to quit
rambling and try to catch up on my sleep.

John
