Odd Noise from the Drive Train... HELP ME PLEASE !!! :)

I have an 86 Scirocco with an auto tranny.  Whenever i put any sort of 
"strain" on the drive train (i.e. accelerating, brakeing, climbing hills, 
coasting down hills, etc.) my car make a wirling noise, and occasionally 
bucks.  The faster i go the higher the pitch.  Anyone know what could be 
wrong??  Thanks for any help.
