Need 1.7 Head Help????

Hey I have a nearly new 1.7 goin in my engine and I decided to get my head 
milled for higher compression...I took it to the machinist and he said he 
isn't sure if he should take atleast 1/16 inch off cause it has been ground 
down before..what do u recomend....plus it's an Omni 1.7 with my weber 36mm 
and no smog/computers...
