I've been through this.  There are VERY expensive ways to have the autotranny 
problem fixed on 16V Passats(some company in Ohio or something fixes em 
right).  I didnt' think it was worth it.  My advice - Don't buy an automatic 
passat.  I had receipts showing my car's tranny rebuilt at 60k miles at a 
cost of $3200!!!!!!!!!   It was completely dead again at 102k.   I then put 
in a used tranny with 66k miles and it was shifting horribly.  That's why I 
got rid of the car.  Pulling the motor/tranny twice in a month sucked donkey 
balls and I had no intention of doing it again soon.  If it had been a 5speed 
I'd still have the car without a doubt.  I did like it otherwise.  HTH!
