Homemade adjustable cam gear

I was told that the older VW diesel cam gears are the same as the 16v.  Is
this true?  If it is, I plan on making my own adjustable cam gear.  I have
access to everything I need to make it and if the diesel cam gears are the
same, then I can get them a dime a dozen and practice, and maybe even sell
some!
