Temp gauge light

Hi all,

What does it mean if the light in the temperature gauge continues to
flash after self diagnostic upon starting the car?  I reved the engine a
little and it went off.  The coolant level is fine, the oil is a little
low (albeit less than a quart), and its been very hot here recently.  It
was the end of the day and the car had been sitting in the sun.  Any
ideas?
