I don't really think its preventable(due to self machining), but too many
people don't take tranny maintenance seriously and other problems happen.  You
need to keep the seals in good shape and change the fluid every few years.
I've driven over 200k in watercooled VW's now and I have had one tranny die...
this was my AGB and the reason it died is that it had original tranny
fluid(which leaked out thanks to diff seals) and 124k miles.    I'm using
another AGB right now that has 150kmiles on it with no rebuilds.  I also
highly recommend going to synthetic gear oil.  I use Spectro.  HTH
