Umm... I wouldn't go as far as to say it's "Normal".... mine has done it
maybe once or twice in the year and a half I've owned the car, with the
original alternator. With the new one, it hasn't done it at all.

My car generally revs itself after a cold start. How high it revs is
usually a function of how long it cranked before it started. <1/2 second or
so, it just pops up to 900 and stays there. Normal start, about 1 second
of cranking, it revs to 1200 or so. More than 2 seconds of cranking, and
it will pop up to 1800 or so for about a second or so.

While I wouldn't say it's "normal", I would say the problem is "typical"..
and warrants no repair if it doesn't bother you.

Just remember not to rev your engine violently when it's cold-- just bring
it up gently until the light goes off.
