Screw you, gauge!

Out of the blue, the temperature guage in the center console of my MK1
has decided to jump around uncontrollably. Well, to a certain extent.
When the car is running in any gear, the needle flicks back and forth,
making an annoying clicking sound. When i accelerate, the needle stops
at the actual temperature reading. Besides keeping my foot on the gas
all the time (which i do anyways) what can I check to fix this problem?

PS. I just witnessed an accident tonite... this guy flips his truck on
its side and stumbles out. I nearly rear-end him as I come around an icy
blind corner. I ask him if he's okay and he laughs and says he shouldn't
have drunk so much tonite. This is the second accident I've witnessed in
my scirocco involving drunk drivers. Take a f*!!*&$ taxi, people.
