re: top speed

On my way to Toronto last year, I hit 116 in my stock 16v-- under about 2/3
throttle. My feeling was that it'd probably do around 125, with what was
left over.

I hit the speed limiter (135mph/220kmh) in an S500 Mercedes. I had my
Mom's 93 Camry pegged at its top speed (112mph/180kmh) for 10 miles and
have the ticket to prove it. <ugh> And my fastest long-distance run was an
hour and 17 minutes at the speed limiter in my Corolla - 116mph/185kmh.

However, years before that, I lived in Germany. Had my Dad's Audi 90
Quattro 20v up to 235km/h (146mph) for a couple minutes. But the fastest I
ever moved in a car was 255km/h in my friend's dad's 540i (158mph). The
car could handle it, the driver could handle it, the roads could handle
it-- but it was *still* too fast. :)

And wrt to the Scirocco being a fast car? Yes, Sciroccos generally are
pretty quick, but by no stretch of the imagination are they fast. Even
with the Mk2's "slippery" coefficient of drag of 0.38 (I was, for the
record, being sarcastic), there's only so far you can go with 120hp.

And I agree with Alan's comments about Tyrone-- to dump $5000 into a
Scirocco to turbocharge it is just, as the expression goes, putting a
band-aid over a bullet wound. If you want something that's really *that*
fast, don't waste your time with an A1 car... sure, I love my A1... but
it's not a Supercar.. and I think that's what you're looking for. Trade in
the Rocco and get a 944 Turbo. :)
