Yes, they come in different offsets.  What I did when I swapped the '84
engine over was to forget about the outer of the two crank mounted
pulleys and use whichever waterpump from the two engines I had to play
with which had the pulley that lined up with the inner crank pulley.
This way I used the 1.7's alt mounting brackets, forgoing the heavy iron
shelf that held the old A/C pump and Alt.

Now, the way things line up, I don't have the problem I had before with
my '81 were the 90 amp altenators wouldn't fit without replacing the
Alt. pulley.

An alternate plan I had was to loosen the water pump and mount one belt
from the pump to the crank, then tighten it back up. (Hard to adjust
belt tension though). Then I'd slip another belt from the crank to the
Alt.
 Kinda funky but it looked like it would work.
