split heat

ok, i have this peculiar heating system. when i turn on the heat, it
only comes out the center two vents and the defroster, and cold air
comes out the side vents. when i turn on the a/c(which im pretty sure
doesnt actually work) i get heat from the canter and cold from the
sides. has anyone ever seen this happen before? or even know what it
might be?
