DOT 3 or 4?

My 'rocc seems to be devoid of brake fluid in the reservoir.  I think it's
the seals where it sits on the MC, from the appearance of the surface rust
on the MC.  The reservoir says to use DOT4.  I believe I have some DOT3 in
the garage, but I know I don't have DOT4.  The lackey at the local Autozone
told me I could mix the two without a problem, but this sounds kind of
strange.  Does he know what he's talking about?  The nice folks at Autozone
have lied to me before, so I wonder.
