Massive sudden oil leak: Am I toast?

Before I start this, I don't want to hear any "told you so" statements from
the 8v crew! ;-)

My 87 16v (the beater) started making a funny knocking noise this morning on
the way to work. I check my oil at least once a week, but suddenly it was
almost off the dip stick! I topped it off and the noise went away a mile or
two down the road to work.

I went for a drive at lunch, and stopped at a gas station to check my oil.
Almost off the stick again! I topped it off and drove back to the office.
It's raining here today, and I could see a rainbow trail on the pavement all
the way into the parking lot.

I haven't really looked at it yet, but I'm wondering where to begin. Cracked
block? Head gasket? Anything else? It wasn't obvious standing in front of
the car when I added more oil. I couldn't see any smoke in my rear view
mirror, so I don't think it was coming out my tailpipe. The engine still
seems to run fine (or, at least as well as it did).

I've been frustrated with this car since I've owned it, and I'm almost to
the point of giving in. The ironic thing is that I just got the bank to
release the title on my other 16v!

Anyone want 16v parts (I'm not serious...yet)?
