Re: taller 5th gear- anyone do this?

Hey Tony,
I did the swap on my 87 16v. The sock gear is 0.91, and I went with an
0.75. The difference is amazing. Instead of 4000rpm at 75mph, the car is
comfortably cruising at 3250. Instead of 31mpg, I now get 36mpg on the
highway. The loss of torque isn't bad at all, but the car won't like you if
you make it go less than 45mph in 5th-- it will cruise on level ground at
anything down to about 40, but it won't like you if you hit the gas.

You can pay outrageous amounts of $$ ($295) for the gears from Autotech,
or you can get them from a junkyard. My VW tranny specialist did the whole
thing for me for a bit more than Autotech charges just for the gears..

It was worth every single, last, shiny, teensy penny. I would do it again
in a flash.
