Exhaust runs Cherry Red - non turbo

Getting my stuff lined up to tackle the '78 out in the driveway.

When I 1st saw it it was running poorly and I wanted to ge to the driver
as if he was guilty of animal cruelty. :)

A few days later I owned it and got it back home hardly able to run at
all, took repeated pushing from the GTI to get it going ( against my
better advise and judgment ). 

By the time it was under it's own power it ran poorly, would die if you
took your foot off the pedal, and the exhaust down pipe was glowing like
a turbo!

Preamble leads to this:

- Too lean?

- TIming off?

- SOmething else?

- All of the above?
