Trans. overhaul

Just curious what you guys have seen in the way of cost of transmission work?
I pick up a used 5-speed from Brian H. on this list(thanks Brian & Nate).
Since this thing is going to see lots of HP I wanted to have it checked out.
A local gear shop charges $20 to open it up and take a look and a total of
$250 (labor) to completely go thru the transaxle.  Parts are extra.  They have
experience with VW transaxles, in fact they were putting in a Quaife into a
Passat transmission when I stopped by.  Comments anyone?
