One reason you may not be hearing it is you are running hi octane gas, since
it has less inclination to burn the higher the number then it will be less
likely to pre-ignite (kinda like a diesel ).

You can hear it when you mash on the gas, say going uphill, and it will
sometimes sound like an old style coffee percolator or a playing card in the
spokes or perhaps Klklkklklkklkklklklkklklklk ( sound of a rolling L sound ).

If you run the gas really low, put in a couple gallons of 87 gas and try it
again it may very well give you the dratted sound. Go back to the station to
top off with Hi test and you are back in action.
